How to connect to Hamtramck Public Schools BYOD network.

Chromebooks / Android Phones / Android Tablets

Connect to NPS BYOD

EAP method should be PEAP

EAP phase 2 should be MSCHAPv2

Server CA certificate should be DEFAULT or USE SYSTEM CERTIFICATES 

Online certificate status should be REQUEST STATUS

Subject match / Subject alternative name match - leave blank

Domain or Domain suffix match is "hamtramckschools.org"

Identity is the student or staff username, (for example "lovjov", don't add @ or @hamtramckschools.org)

Password is the student or staff password

Anonymous identity - leave blank *** on Android 14, fill this out last, and if leaving it blank doesn't work, try your user ID instead

Save identity and password (or Auto reconnect) - yes

*Note for Chromebooks:  Log off the Chromebook before joining the wireless network.  Connect from the icon on the login screen.


iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch

Open Settings

Select Wi-Fi

Make sure Wi-Fi is toggled on

Select NPS BYOD

Put in your username and password (do not add @hamtramckschools.org or @)

If prompted, click "TRUST" in the upper right to trust  *.hamtramckschools.org

iCloud Private Relay must be turned off!


Windows Desktops / Windows Laptops - Windows 7 and older are not supported

Connect to NPS BYOD

Normally you will just be prompted for your username (you don't need to add @hamtramckschools.org or @) and password, but if asked for additional information, use the following settings;

Security type should be WPA2-Enterprise AES

EAP method should be Protected EAP (PEAP)

Authentication method should be Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

Connect automatically should be checked


MacBook / MacBook Pro / iMac - Mac OS X 10.12 and older are not supported

Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu

Select Network

Select Wi-Fi

Turn Wi-Fi on

Choose NPS BYOD under Network Name

Username is the student or staff email address (for example "smithab@" or "smithcd@hamtramckschools.org") *If email doesn't work, try just the login portion.

Password is the student or staff password

Select Remember This Network

Click Join

If required, click Continue to verify the certificate from *.hamtramckschools.org

If prompted, enter the admin password for your Mac

Nintendo Switch

From the Home Screen, choose System Settings

Select Internet

Select Internet Settings

Scroll down to "Networks Found" at the bottom

Select "NPS Guest" - Note:  the NPS Guest network is only available after 3pm on school days, and any time on Saturday and Sunday.

The Switch will say "Registration is required to use this network"

Click "Next", and wait for the NPS logo to appear

Click "A" to accept the terms and conditions


General Information / Additional Troubleshooting

If you changed your district username or password, you will need to "forget" the  NPS BYOD wireless network and reconnect.

Never connect a district owned device to the NPS BYOD network.  The "Bring Your Own Device" network is for personal devices only.

VPN services such as Norton 360 VPN, Xfinity VPN, and Cloudflare WARP are not supported and must be uninstalled/disabled.

The TEMU shopping app and Proton VPN must also be uninstalled/disabled.

To disable on Chrome / Firefox / Edge:

Select the three-dot menu in your browser > Settings.

Select Privacy and security > Security.

Scroll down and disable "Use secure DNS".

Select the menu button > Settings.

In the General menu, scroll down to access Network Settings.

Select Settings.

Select Disable DNS over HTTPS

Select the three-dot menu in your browser > Settings.

Select Privacy, Search, and Services, and scroll down to Security.

Disable Use secure DNS.
